Mad Men Style: The Wiggle Dress
Mad Men was my favorite show. I love the characters in all their madness and depth. I loved the story line, the history and of course the fashion. Whether it was Betty Draper's feminine and sweet dresses with full skirts or Megan's California bohemian style - I swooned over the retro fashions. When I spotted this mustard colored wiggle dress with bows on its sleeves and a peter pan collar - I immediately thought of Joan from Mad Men. Joan with her famed hourglass figure also had a serious collection of wiggle dresses that accentuated her curves as she strutted through the office. I loved how she used a brooch or a long pendant to draw even more attention to her bust.
So What Exactly is a Wiggle Dress and Who Wore Them?
A wiggle dress is a body con dress that's meant to accentuate an hourglass figure. These dresses became popular in the 50's-60's, The dresses are narrower at the hem than it is around the hips - which means your knees stay close and causes a sexy hip wiggle as you walk.
Not only did Joan from Mad Men wear them but real life actresses like Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, Diana Dohrs and Elizabeth Taylor donned these sexy pieces. They all shook their hips with their tight dresses and had a glamorous appeal that made the wiggle dress a staple in any closet of a vintage lover.
A Modern Twist
I loved this modern take of a wiggle dress by Unique Vintage (which is sadly sold out now). Fear not though Unique Vintage has a plethora of sexy and unforgettable dresses that will exaggerate those curves just right and make your hips wiggle! Elizabeth Grant perfectly captured a Mad Men theme in these shots from our photo shoot.
